According to an article published by the BBC in 2023, vapers in the UK throw away a jaw-dropping 5 million disposable vapes every week. That’s an absolutely enormous number, and the problem is just as bad in every nation where vaping is popular. Some people don’t even bother throwing their vapes in the trash; they simply drop the devices wherever they happen to be at that moment. The massive waste is one of the reasons why the UK government is set to ban disposables in the near future.

The fact that few people recycle their vapes is a major problem for the environment. We have millions upon millions of battery-powered vapes rotting away in landfills while mining companies use massive amounts of fuel and water to satisfy the demand for lithium. Clearly, this situation isn’t sustainable – but before anything can change, vape manufacturers need to make their products easier to recycle. That’s exactly what the engineers at Innokin are doing with new devices like the Innokin Trine.

The Innokin Trine is one of the first pod systems with a battery that’s removable for easy recycling. It even has a completely new feature – an automatic self-discharge operation – that makes battery recycling safer. If you’re concerned about the impact that vaping has on the environment, the Innokin Trine is definitely the device that you want to buy because it’s a product that has the potential to make a huge difference. In this review, I’m going to tell you everything that you need to know about it.

How Much Does the Innokin Trine Cost?

The Innokin Trine is available in six different colours.

The Innokin Trine costs £15.99 and includes the device along with two pods, two batteries, a USB-C charging cable and an instruction manual. Although the kit includes two pods, you may want to grab some additional pods before checking out to ensure that you have some backups if a pod burns out prematurely. Innokin Trine pods cost £2.49 each. When you buy the Innokin Trine through our link, your order will be dispatched on the same day if it’s placed before 4 PM. Orders over £49.99 ship free.

Innokin Trine: Specifications and Features

Let’s continue this review with an explanation of what the Innokin Trine is all about. I’ll start with a list of basic specifications, and then I’ll delve into the features that make this device so unique.

Specifications

  • Device Type: Refillable pod system
  • Battery Capacity: 1,000 mAh removable battery
  • Charging Port: USB-C; device supports vaping while charging when battery’s charge level is 10 percent or higher (battery indicator is yellow or green)
  • Power Range: 6-25 watts; adjustable in .5-watt increments
  • Pod Capacity: 2.0 ml
  • Coil Resistance: 0.6-1.2 ohm
  • Firing Style: Puff-based or button-based firing

Features

The Innokin Trine battery is removable for easy recycling.

  • The Innokin Trine is one of the first small-format pod systems with a removable battery. The specifications are clearly marked on the side of the battery to simplify the recycling process. Once it’s removed from the device, the Innokin Trine battery looks the same as any other removable battery pack, so any recycling company should take it. The Trine even has an automatic self-discharge function that drains the battery’s charge to make the recycling process even safer.
  • It has a winning combination of simple operation and advanced features. If you want to just drop in a pod and start vaping, you can do that. The Trine automatically detects the resistance of the installed pod and suggests an appropriate wattage. If you’re looking for an experience that allows for greater flexibility, the Trine offers variable wattage, adjustable airflow and three pod options. Unless you’re a major cloud chaser, you should have no problem finding a configuration that suits your vaping preferences.
  • The pod fills from the top, which means that you can refill it without removing it from the device. The top-filling design also helps to prevent leaking.
  • A small front-mounted display shows the device’s current wattage and remaining battery charge. The screen can also display an error message in the event of a problem.

What Pods Work with the Innokin Trine?

The Innokin Trine has pods that support both mouth-to-lung and restricted direct-to-lung inhaling.

The Innokin Trine has three different pods available. Two of the pods are included with the kit, and the third pod is available separately.

  • 0.6-Ohm Pod: Suggested power range of 20-22 watts. Included with the kit.
  • 0.8-Ohm Pod: Suggested power range of 12-14 watts. Included with the kit.
  • 1.2-Ohm Pod: Suggested power range of 11-12 watts. Available separately.

How to Use the Innokin Trine

The Innokin Trine has a simple control scheme and a single-button interface.

The people at Innokin have done a good job of writing an instruction manual that fully describes the features of the Innokin Trine and explains how to use the device. In case you’d like a quick overview, though, I’ll walk you through the key details that you need to know.

How to Charge the Innokin Trine

To charge the Innokin Trine, connect it to your computer using the USB-C charging cable included in the package. While the device charges, the battery indicator in the top-right corner of the screen shows the current charge level. When the indicator is full, the device is fully charged.

How to Fill the Innokin Trine Pod

To open the Innokin Trine pod, tilt the pod’s mouthpiece while gently pulling it away from the pod. Under the mouthpiece, you’ll see the filling port positioned to the side of the pod’s centre vapour channel. Add your e-liquid through the filling port and replace the mouthpiece. Wait several minutes before you begin vaping.

How to Vape with the Innokin Trine

To use the Innokin Trine, either hold the fire button or simply puff on the mouthpiece. While you use the device, you can customise your experience by adjusting the wattage or the airflow. Adjust the airflow by moving the tab on the side of the device. To change the wattage, press the fire button twice to enter the power adjustment mode. In this mode, you can click the button to adjust the power in 0.5-watt increments. When you reach your desired wattage, stop pressing the button. After a moment, the Trine saves your selected wattage and exits the adjustment mode automatically.

You can turn the Innokin Trine on and off by pressing the fire button three times quickly.

When Is It Time to Replace the Pod?

It’s time to replace the pod when the device’s flavour quality is no longer acceptable. After several days of vaping, you’ll begin to taste a burnt flavour from the pod. At that point, it’s time for a new pod.

How to Remove and Recycle the Innokin Trine Battery

The EcoDrain self-discharging mode makes the Innokin Trine battery safer to recycle.

When one of the batteries for your Innokin Trine stops holding a charge – or if you’re done using the device – it’s time to take advantage of this product’s key feature by recycling the battery. The Innokin Trine has an automatic self-discharge mode called EcoDrain that helps to facilitate easy recycling by draining the battery’s charge. To use this mode, turn the device off and connect the charging cable. Press the fire button 10 times quickly, and you should see a recycling symbol appear on the screen. The automatic self-discharge may take several minutes to complete.

Innokin Trine Error Messages: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Since the Innokin Trine has a screen, it has the ability to display an error message when it isn’t working as it should. If you’re having an issue with your device, the error message can help you determine what you should do next. Here are the device’s error messages and what they mean.

  • Low Volt: This message indicates that the battery’s voltage is low. Charge the battery.
  • Coil Check, Low Res or Coil Short: These messages indicate that the Innokin Trine either can’t detect the pod or has detected that the pod’s resistance is incorrect. Start by removing the pod and checking for a leak. If you find e-liquid under the pod, dry the Innokin Trine and the pod thoroughly and try vaping again. If you continue to see the error message, replace the pod.
  • Time Out: You’ve inhaled or held the fire button for more than 10 seconds and exceeded the Innokin Trine’s automatic puff limiter. Take shorter puffs to avoid seeing this error message.
  • High Temp: The internal temperature of the Innokin Trine is too high. Stop vaping, move the device to a cooler location and wait a while for it to return to room temperature. Don’t use the Innokin Trine or any other vaping device in direct sunlight, and don’t store it in your car when you aren’t using it.

Innokin Trine Review: The Bottom Line

I think that the Innokin Trine is a really great product. For a while now, it’s been very clear that vaping hasn’t quite fulfilled the promise of being more environmentally friendly than smoking. Since the invention of the filtered cigarette, cigarette butts have been the most common types of consumer litter on the planet. Although littering has become completely socially unacceptable over the past few decades, many smokers still toss their butts anywhere with little thought despite the fact that the filters are toxic plastic. Vaping was supposed to help resolve that issue, but the lithium-ion batteries that are being tossed on the street or thrown away in landfills are arguably even worse.

It’s up to the manufacturers to develop new product designs to eliminate the friction that causes people to throw their vaping devices away instead of recycling them. Although the Trine isn’t perfect, it’s clear that Innokin is leading the way with this device’s removable battery and automatic self-discharge mode. If you’re concerned about the impact that vaping has on the environment – and really, we should all be – this is definitely one of the best vapes in the UK right now.

Pros

  • No vaping device is easier to recycle. Any recycling company that handles lithium-ion batteries should accept the Trine battery with no issue.
  • The Trine has a winning combination of simplicity for beginners and extra features for advanced vapers.
  • The power and airflow are adjustable.
  • The kit includes a spare battery.
  • The automatic self-discharge feature makes the battery safer to drop off for recycling.

Cons

  • Additional batteries aren’t easy to find and will only be widely available if the Trine is a successful product.
  • The charging port is on the device rather than the battery, so the battery can only charge inside the device. If you want to use one battery while charging another, you’ll need to have two devices.
